Career Overview
Orthodontists are dental specialists who focus on diagnosing, preventing, and treating misaligned teeth and jaws. They design and apply braces, retainers, and other devices to straighten teeth and correct bite issues, helping patients achieve healthier and aesthetically pleasing smiles. Orthodontists play an important role in improving both the appearance and function of the teeth. Unlike general dentists, orthodontists undergo additional training to focus on the alignment of the teeth and jaw structure.
Daily Responsibilities
Examine teeth and jaws to identify misalignment or bite issues
Create personalized treatment plans, including the use of braces, clear aligners, or retainers
Apply and adjust orthodontic devices
Educate patients on proper oral hygiene and care during treatment
Take X-rays and impressions to assist in treatment planning
Work closely with dental assistants and hygienists

Undergraduate Education - Bachelor’s Degree [4 years]
Dental School - Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) [4 years]
Orthodontic Residency [2-3 years]
Optional Fellowship for Subspecialities [1-2 years]
Licensure - National Board Dental Examination
Salary
Entry Level: $100,000 - $130,000
Experienced: $150,000 - $250,000+
